Please note that these are the briefest of details, which may assist students on a First Aid at Work course. Complete reference is by reading the Regulations themselves or by contacting the Health & Safety Executive.Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 Employers and the self-employed must make "adequate and appropriate" first aid provision for employees all the time they are at work; this will include training for personnel, equipment, facilities and ways of informing their employees about this provision. They are also "strongly encouraged" to make extra provision for the public; provision for employees must not be affected.
PERSONNEL Preparation courses for "First Aid at Work" and "Appointed Person"; see "First Aid Courses" on this site.

INFORMING OTHERS e.g. posters, internal directory, wall certificates, induction programmes, etc.
Q: How do I know what provision to make? A: Undertake a Risk Assessment using these factors:
* risk factors identified in the employer’s risk assessments * any specific risks (eg tools, loads, machinery) * do different areas need different provision (eg office, workshop, etc) * what is the past history of accidents and illness? * how many people are employed on the site? * employee types e.g. young, inexperienced, disabled? * are the premises spread out? * is there out of hours (shift) working? * how near the NHS emergency services (eg ambulance station/s) are * employees who travel or are alone need special help * are any of your sites occupied by other employers? * work experience employees also need to be covered
